Effect of Glucagon on Thoracic Duct Lymph Flow in Hemorrhagic Shock

Abstract
Glucagon, the hyperglycemic glycogenolytic hormone, has been shown to increase total hepatic blood flow in man and in the dog by several investigators. However, the effect of glucagon on the other vascular beds has been subject to much less study and a few author reported that the adminstration of glucagon produced a significant inotropic and chronotropic action on the heart and slight decrease of systemic vascular resistance. The effect of glucagon on the thoracic duct lymph* flow has not been investigated.
This experimental study was carried out to observe the effect of glucagon on the thoracic duct lymph flow in hemorrhagic shock.
Following the intravenous adminstration of glucagon in six spienectomized mongrel dogs with hemorrhagic shock of 63-60 mmHg blood pressure, femoral artery pressure showed no change, central venous pressure was slightly increased and the lymph flow of thoracic duct was considerably increased. No relation between blood glucose level and increment of thoracic duct lymph flow was noted.
